Born on an island off the Maine cost, Persis Clayton Weirs seemed destined to be an artist. Spending summers on the island and winters along the Maine coast, she developed her artistic skills through close observation of the animals and wildlife around her home. Her father taught her to identify and appreciate the characteristics and beauty of the animals and their surrounding habitat.
Weirs has exhibited in annual art shows as well as galleries and museums. Her many awards include the “Sportsman’s Award” at the Wildlife Art Show in Augusta, Maine. As an artist, Weirs hopes “to share through my work my respect for wildlife and my sense of responsibility for the quality of the environment. If my paintings can pass on to others just a fraction of the pleasure and fascination I find in nature, then I have succeeded.”
